I really enjoy macro and close up photography and Butterflies are my favourite subject. I live close to some very good sites on the limestone hills around Morecambe Bay and I go there as often as I can during the spring and summer months.

In 2008, we spent a week in The Dordogne area of France. This was an amazing place for butterflies both for variety of species and numbers.

I take all my photos in the animals' natural habitat, using a handholding technique. I never use a tripod or monopod mainly because these fast moving creatures would be long gone before I could get set up. However, I'm thinking that to get the very best quality of image a tripod may be a useful piece of equipment and I may try this next season.

Many of the Fritillary species which I enjoy photographing so much are becoming desperately rare in Britain now and it's often difficult just to find them let alone get a half decent shot!!

Your images display a great deal of sensitivity toward the subjects you photograph. From my experience, some of them may be relevant to magazine market as well. Have you ever thought about that? Fortunately, you do not have to invest a lot of money. The first photo I sold was taken by a 4Mp Nikon Coolpix. What you really need to do is to find an appropriate magazine for your images. There are a few really good books and websites on the subject if you go looking. My suggestion is to check one of them - http://www.freelance-market.net - and try a couple magazines until you find out what can really work for you. And certainly don't be discouraged if your images are rejected or not used. After all, it’s fun!

I very much enjoyed browsing through this gallery - and am rather envious of several species that I have never seen. Fantastic Fritillaries.
